When someone asks you what is the most profound thing you ever learned, what do you think of? This question can apply to so many different things in life, but for me I was asked to think about it in terms of my Writing, Research, and Technology class. After thinking about it for a while I realized that there were two profound things that I learned. One is focusing on how to focus a
project, blog post, or presentation around a concept or idea, and the second is
that the use of writing, research, and technology can be explored and expressed
in different ways (for example our class explored art and Instagram and
expressed our findings about them using writing, research, and technology).
This course challenged me to think more deeply about topics, which made me focus more on a topic rather than addressing questions in a linear format. I learned how to better organize a project, blog post, or presentation around an idea or concept. I am most proud of my blog posts because I think that they really demonstrate what I have just discussed. Whether it be writing
about Jiro and his sushi, studium and punctum, my topic I was researching on
Instagram, or about art in relation to John Berger, I tried to focus these
topics around a concept or idea. I believe that focusing a project around a concept or idea is important for all writers because it allows for us to be more interesting and for our own style to emerge.
The other thing that I learned in this course was how the use of writing, research, and technology can be explored and expressed in different ways. There are different ways to go about research, such as using interviews. I also learned how you can take something like Instagram and find out something so much deeper about it that can be expressed in writing. There are also different ways to use technology, such as blogging or creating a presentation or posting a project on a website.
Being able to use different mediums to express my ideas and concepts allowed me to explore a topic in a way that I wanted to and be able to present it to an audience in a way that expressed my understanding. I learned more about how to write for audiences, and while I knew prior to this course that it is important to remember an audience and their needs, this course made me think in-depth about how others could access and understand the challenging concepts I was learning about. I learned how to take information and formulate it differently for different genres and audiences, which is something that I will carry with me into other courses.
When asked to think about a profound thing you learned, whether it be in a class or a something in your life, sometimes it can be hard to choose. There are
different profound things in each person’s life that make them into the person
they are today. For me, in this course I have learned things that will
carry with me into other courses, and will even help me be a better thinker and
writer in other aspects in life. The things we learn in our life and through our education are building blocks that allow us to learn, grow, and become more well-rounded individuals with different styles and ways of expressing ourselves.
